ABOUT ME

I began learning the pipes in 1988 with the City of Berwick Pipes & Drums (now named City of Casey Pipe Band). After playing with them for 5-6 years I then joined the City of Nunawading Highland Pipe Band (now named Australia Highlanders). I played with them for 5-6 years and progressed through the ranks from Grade 4 to Grade 1 (top). Whilst playing in these bands, I also competed in solo piping competitions. I have been award first place in the Overseas Class of the Lowland & Border Pipers Society Annual Competitions for 2014 and 2015.

Throughout my involvement with the pipes, I have been interested in all aspects of piping, including interest with other types of pipes and I produced several school projects on the pipes. I studied the bagpipes for VCE Music (solo performance) and was awarded Colours for Music.

For a few years I was the editor of ‘Pipe Bands Victoria’, the monthly magazine of the Victorian Highland Pipe Bands Association (now named Pipe Bands Victoria). I was involved in the Pipers’ Club of Victoria until it closed in the early 1990s and was the Official Piper of the Scottish Gaelic Society of Victoria for many years.

In the mid-1990s, I became interested in folk music and have played various types of pipes at many music sessions and festivals. I have played the pipes in the band Corryvreckan and as a guest musician for several bands, including Area 7, Thunderstruck, the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, Eilean Mor, Donegal Express, Myra MacRae bandCath Connelly, Colin MacLeod, Jamie McKinnon, Braemar, the Geelong Summer Music Camp 2013 and Taliska (current). I have recorded with the last five performers.

I began teaching the pipes during my time with the Nunawading Pipe Band and have taught pupils at Nunawading and at the Geelong RSL Pipes & Drums and currently teach privately. My pupils have ranged from school-aged beginners to older, more experienced players.

I am currently working towards providing certificate level tuition and am producing a book, aimed at learner (to advanced) pipers, covering all aspects of the piping world, including the history, famous players, pipe-makers and tutors, music theory, performance, tuition, exercises and tunes, maintenance and other information and references.

I currently play the Great Highland Bagpipe, Scottish small pipes, Northumbrian small pipes, Border pipes, tin whistles and other instruments. I offer services for piping performances (weddings, parties, functions, etc.), tuition, workshops, maintenance/repairs and tune composition.
